My name is Theresa Holmes, and I was born in Greeley, Colorado, named for famous newspaper man Horace Greeley. I grew up in Richland, Washington, home of the Hanford Atomic Works. Since then, I’ve lived in Dillon, Montana (blue ribbon trout fishing in the Beaverhead River), the Downriver Area of Detroit, Dillon (again), Greeley, Colorado, and since 1994, Colorado Springs, Colorado, surrounded by the Air (and Space) Force Academy, Air Force Space Command at Peterson AFB, and Ft. Carson. Pikes Peak’s pink granite towers over the city and reminds me daily of the song “America the Beautiful,” penned by its author over a century ago after a trip to the top in a horse-drawn carriage. I have no desire to live anywhere else, save perhaps a city of my design on the Moon.
Since learning of Sputnik at the age of six, I’ve been fascinated by space and the possibilities for living and working there. I’ve been a fan of the original Star Trek and its follow-ons, and of sci-fi and fantasy greats from Isaac Asimov to David and Leigh Eddings, to Anne McCaffrey, Christopher Stasheff, and beyond. But I’ve also become acquainted with astronauts from Buzz Aldrin to Ron Sega and Charlie Walker, and rocket designers and engineers of all kinds, who remind me to keep at least one toe on the ground because making history is much harder than writing about it.
Unlike the astronauts and rocket designers whose main concern is getting there, my main concern is once we get there, what are we going to live in? I’ve been designing my ideal house since the age of 8, and designing villages that could be built anywhere in the solar system ever since, but especially for the last 20 years. I’ve also been writing about what it would be like to live in those villages–as well as how to grow up so we can live in those villages without experiencing the kinds of heartache we so often experience here and now.
Join me in exploring space and time from the here and now to the there and then, to say nothing of the Realms of Light and beyond, from a unique perspective unlike any you’ve ever experienced.
